Geothermal Alternative Energy The Potential for Indonesia

Geothermal energy sources are environmentally friendly and has great potential to be developed in Indonesia. This energy source also tends to not be exhausted because of the continuous process of formation during the waking state lingkungannnya balance. Geothermal potential of Indonesia is owned by 27 Gwe, equivalent to about 12 billion barrels of petroleum to the operation for 30 years. Based on the fact that the Government projected contribution of geothermal to power about 9,500 Mwe or 5% of electricity generation in 2025. It is stipulated in the Presidential Regulation. 5 of 2006 regarding the National Energy Policy.

Development of geothermal potential based on 3 things, which is a great potential, among other things, first, found on the field Seulawah Agam (NAD), Tampomas, and Cisolok-Cisukarame (West Java), Mount Unggaran (Central Java), Ngebel Willis (East Java ), and Jailolo (Halmahera, North Maluku). Second, the soaring oil prices nearing U.S. $ 100 / barrel so as to encourage use of alternative fuels. Third, the issue of global warming due to fossil fuel use. Geothermal energy can play a role in reducing greenhouse gases.

Besides issuing Presidential Decree 5 / 2006, the Government has also issued Law No. 27 year 2003 about geothermal, and Government Regulation no. 59 of 2007 on Geothermal Business Activities. Laws and regulations are intended to encourage the development and utilization of geothermal energy.
